January 4, 2019How to Make Sure Your Heavy Equipment Makes it Through The Winter
March 20, 2019If you’re one of the many contractors who have constant construction work during the winter months, then you might benefit from the following tips to keep your equipment in great condition. As you know well, the winter months take their toll on your equipment. If you want to maintain your tools and equipment, consider this list of tips.
Heavy Equipment Oil and Coolant Tips
First, check your oil to make sure it matches the outside temperature. Oil viscosity must be verified to ensure that you’re using the right kind. A good option is to use a low viscosity engine or hydraulic oil to improve the flow time of your oil. Also, change your oil out before the winter season.
Coolants
For coolants, make sure you’re using the right mix of coolant ot make sure your engine is running as smoothly as possible. In an ideal world, you’ll use a 50/50 ratio to keep your engine running. In colder climates, however, try out a 70 to 30 coolant to water ratio to make sure your water doesn’t freeze. Check that your radiator is filled up to the cap and then inspect it for proper pressure before every winter season.
How Is Your Battery?
The electrolyte of your battery should be filled up to the proper level on your battery as well. Be sure to check out the alternator and test your battery as it is now to insure it is ready to go. Your battery terminals need to be debris and rust free. If your equipment is stored, remove your batteries and store them in a building or warehouse.
Protect Tires and Fuel in Winter
Before, during, and after the winter season, you need to check out your fuel and tire pressure. Look for wear marks on your tire and your fuel tanks should be maintained on full to prevent condensation. You can also use a fuel treatment to thaw frozen fuel filters. Also, be sure to keep a spare filter on hand.
